Note Taking/Active Reading Assignment - TWO PARTS (Due by Tuesday, Oct. 10) in Google Classroom

Note Taking/Active Reading Assignment - TWO PARTS (Due by Tuesday, Oct. 10)

This week,  you will have the opportunity to try note taking and text book reading techniques discussed through the activities.  I recommend you complete the activities during the first part of the week, then work through the strategies during the second week.  It also gives you the opportunity to try more than one method, to see what may fit best for you.

There are two (2) parts to this assignment.

Note Taking Methods - When I began college, I thought I knew how to take useful notes.  It took me a while to figure out a way to take notes that allowed me to focus on class materials and use them to learn material.  For this assignment, you get to try different note taking styles.

Choose a class you are enrolled in this semester and at least two note taking methods that  you want to practice.

Identify the subject and note taking methods you chose.  Take or rewrite your notes using the two methods, over the two weeks. If you have already taken notes in the class you chose, rewrite the notes - using one of the new methods you chose. If you have not already taken notes in the class, during your next class, take notes using one of the methods you chose.
Share both sets of notes.  They do not have to be perfect, it is alright if they are a work in progress at the end of the module.
If you already have found an effective way to take notes - you do not have to try another way, just show the way you are taking notes.
Notes may be electronic or on paper, but share them here on this Google Assignment (you can always take a picture of the paper notes with your phone and submit).

Reading Textbooks

Choose a textbook you are using/reading this semester.
Practice active reading.  Select at least two active reading strategies and apply them
Write a paragraph or two reflecting on how effective these strategies were for your reading comprehension and retention.

** PLEASE NOTE **
If the classes you are taking this semester do not include any notetaking or textbooks, you may use one of the following options to complete the assignments.
1. Do any of your classes have posted readings?  You may use one of those posted readings for this assignment.
2. If you can identify the notetaking method and/or active reading strategies you take when you do have to take notes or read texts, explain what you use.

This is due today (Wednesday). in Google Classroom

Stress and Connections - Read instructions carefully for your post and response expectations. in Google Classroom

Stress and Connections - Read instructions carefully for your post and response expectations.

This week we are focusing on managing stressors and making connections. As humans, we are wired to interact with others. We often experience physical and emotional energy boosts when we do something nice for others. One way we can do that is to treat others the way we want to be treated, complete "random acts of kindness" and/or "pay it forward".

"Paying it forward" happens when we do something nice, helpful and/or unexpected for someone, because someone else was nice to us. The "pay it forward" event could be a result of something that happened in your past or something that happened recently.

Some examples of kindness activities include shoveling snow from a neighbors walk, paying for the coffee order for the person behind you, leaving an appreciative note for a co-worker or peer to find, baking cookies and taking them to someone who lives alone. The possibilities are limitless.

This week, focus on completing a "random act of kindness" or "paying it forward" event. Carry out the action or event. Describe the event and share your reactions.

Respond to the posts of two classmates.

Please write your post (6-10 sentences) by Wednesday, Sept. 20, and respond to the posts of two classmates by the end of Friday, Sept. 22. Have a great week! I'm lucky to have you all in this class.
